Albuquerque box

The wind pattern that lets balloons fly out over the city and come back to the launch field.

The Albuquerque box is a set of predictable winds: at low levels they tend to blow from the north, and at higher levels from the south. Pilots climb a little, drift south, climb further, drift back north and then descend, flying a vertical box that can return them to the launch park or close to it. It is one reason the Balloon Fiesta works so well in the cool October mornings.
