Camino Real de Tierra Adentro

The Royal Road of the Interior, the Spanish trade route from Mexico City to northern New Mexico that ran past Albuquerque.

The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro ran about 1,590 miles from Mexico City to San Juan Pueblo and was used from 1598 to 1882. Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as an outpost on it, and the river crossing at Barelas was an important crossing on the road. The 404-mile section in the United States became a National Historic Trail in 2000.
