San Felipe de Neri Church

The adobe church on the north side of Old Town Plaza, built in 1793 and still a working parish.

San Felipe de Neri replaced a church that collapsed in the winter of 1792-93 and has been in continuous use for over 200 years. It has thick adobe walls and wooden vigas, with twin bell towers and other Gothic Revival touches added in the Victorian era under Bishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy. The first church on the site was dedicated to St. Francis Xavier; in July 1706 the viceroy changed the patron saint to St. Philip Neri.
