Acequia

A community irrigation ditch, brought by Spanish settlers and still used in the valley neighbourhoods.

Acequias are canals that carry snowmelt and rain to orchards, gardens and fields. Their traditional form of governance is the oldest form of European resource management still alive in the United States. In Albuquerque the acequia tradition continues in places such as Los Ranchos, Corrales, the South Valley and Isleta Village, where land is still farmed with acequia water.
