Bosque

The cottonwood forest along the Rio Grande, Spanish for “forest”, with trails through the middle of the city.

A bosque is a gallery forest along a river. The middle Rio Grande bosque runs about 300 miles from Santa Fe through Albuquerque toward El Paso, and Albuquerque’s stretch is a ribbon of cottonwood, willow and mesquite that over 270 bird species use, including wintering sandhill cranes. The endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow lives in the river. The Paseo del Bosque trail and the Rio Grande Nature Center let you walk it.
