Isleta Pueblo

A Southern Tiwa pueblo about 13 miles south of the city on the Rio Grande.

The Pueblo of Isleta, established about the 14th century, lies south of Albuquerque and is documented in writing since the early 17th century, when it became the site of the San Agustin de la Isleta Mission. In 2016 about 90,000 acres were taken into federal trust for the pueblo. Its Southern Tiwa name, Shiewhibak, refers to a traditional footrace. Pablo Abeita, a former governor of Isleta, named the KiMo Theatre.
