Central Avenue and Route 66

The city’s main street; U.S. Route 66 ran along it from 1937 to 1985.

Central Avenue was once called Railroad Avenue and took its present name in 1907. Route 66 first came through Albuquerque in 1926 on Fourth Street and was moved onto Central in 1937; by 1955 the street had 98 motels. The highway was decommissioned in 1985, but neon signs and motels survive, especially in Nob Hill. Central also divides the city’s north and south quadrants.
